BT ACUMEN 2007 – "I AM BANGALORED"

Bangalore is awesome!! I have fallen in love with the city. I was last there in 1998 when a tap of beer cost 50 bucks and today it costs 60. 10 years and an increase of just 10 bucks. Wow! So much for inflation! And the weather is amazing. I could go on and on but I would run out of adjectives so I go on flashback mode.

When we were filling the BT Acumen form, I had not even thought that I would be writing in the blog for any other reason than the visit to IIM – B. But there was reason to cheer. Shelton and I were semi-finalists in the B-school debate where we faced ISB, Hyderabad.

The trip didn't quite begin on a pleasant note. First of all, our train was delayed by 2 hours and we had no idea so we just kept whiling away our time waiting. And when we enter our compartment, and it's full of water. Anyway, after overcoming the initial pitfalls, our only worry was whether we would be able to reach IIM –B on time for registration.

Ravi and Arjun could take the liberty of sleeping but Shelton and I were feverishly preparing for the morning's preliminary debate round. But ultimately our sleep deprived eyes finally gave way and it was curtains for us around 3 am.

Next I get up and we are nearing Bangalore, there is a slight chill in the air. Of course the awesome weather of Bangalore has its effect on the surrounding areas as well. We reach Bangalore station and then we embark on numerous haggling sessions with autowallahs, taxi drivers and others and in the end we get one guy who seems to be reasonable totake us to IIM – B. Thank God for keeping the IT companies closed on
weekends. We get there in time to catch some grub and then register.

Shelton and I get to our preliminary debate round and wish all the luck to our quiz champs, Ravi and Arjun. Once again God was o our side because we got the very same topic for which we had prepared the maximum which said "You can't create great brands without Advertising".

The prelims over, we trudged along to meet the quizzers and then headed of to catch some more grub. Meanwhile, we got to meet our host for the rest of the day, DK. History of DK… naah…some other time. Results were to be out at 2 pm so we coerced DK into waiting a little longer. Well the IIM – B mess food is not all that bad. But our North Indian mess is better.

After lunch we are off to see the results and guess what? Debate Semi-finalists LIBA vs ISB and IIM – B vs IIM – K. This was the most pleasant surprise of our lives and I can safely speak on behalf of Shelton as well. This calls for a celebration so immediately we head to LOR and quench our thirst with four pitchers of draught beer.

Now its time we eat something, so we drive around with DK and get some Chicken Shawarma Rolls and 3 huge grilled chickens which u won't believe me, were being cut with a pair of scissors!! I was seeing scissors used for this purpose for the first time.

Then I thought we were going to a mall because it certainly looked like that. But no, it was just the Bangalore equivalent of our friendly neighbourhood TASMAC. Yeah! Can you believe it that I mistook it for a mall? Well that's what happens when you are subjected to the TASMAC phenomenon for too long.

Arjun and Shelton were so eager to get into the shop that they forgot to close the windows and doors of the car though. Of course this we noticed only once we got back. We rushed to see if our laptops and food was intact and guess what…it was. Then Shelton proclaims, "This is Bangalore".

We then head to buy some other stuff and then we see a man, driving an Indigo Marina wearing a helmet. There was something weird about the guy. First he was talking to himself. Second, he suddenly started playing traffic policeman and was signaling us to reverse the car. And to top it all he was wearing a helmet inside the car!!!!

The rest of the story I think has been narrated time and again by me and Shelton. Brand ISB was stronger than Brand LIBA and they got through to the finals where they lost to IIM – B. However, all was not lost. Shelton and I got a cool 1 year subscription to Harvard Business Review and some cool vouchers from Allen Solly. I can't mention the amounts for the fear of getting mugged.

Truly a wonderful experience and I hope LIBA is the South Zone champion in Acumen 2008.

Mindworks Quiz

It was the first quiz of the new academic year and there was a peculiar buzz about it. Mindworks the Quiz Club had a good start to its season as almost all the quizzing enthusiast from the seniors turned up and few from the first years also made an appearance. The quiz was hosted by Ravi and it had all elements of a typical “Ravi Quiz”. Around 12 teams consisting of 3 in a team battled it out in the prelims and 6 teams qualified for the finals. After some fun and interesting rounds of quizzing, it looked like a 3 way battle, but the team of Soubir, RIddhi and John after a brilliant start fizzled out and it looked like the wild card team of Divya, Praveen and DJ could pull out an upset win (tradition of LIBA Quizzes) but a few crucial missed chances saw the more experienced team of Arjun, Kenny and Pama win the quiz by answering the last question. Never the less a very close quiz and the winning team sort of retained the crown which they won last year (Yours truly was joined by Arjun and Kenny that time around). Madhav one of the founders of Mindworks made a special appearance much to the surprise of the participants. It was good start to the club and the events in college and a special thanks to Penny, Dinesh, Ruchir, Debhasish, Mayank and Tudu for helping out with the quiz.

Just Another Day !! Men and Women destined to become managers of tomorrow running to the library and clinging to the seniors to know HOW TO SCORE Os AND YET LOOK DUMB. That's when I ran into Ravi and Arjun. There was a Quiz organized by the Mark-iT Club of LIBA. Hence THE OUTSIDERS happened.

We were looked upon as a wild card entry. But in the end, we steamrolled past everyone. People saw us in a different light. Since then, its been quizzes and quizzes. But one thing remains the same. People still love the books and the profs. They do not pay any heed to their heads. What can you say: Some things never change!

I have not played a big role ever since that first quiz. However, it has been a different experience. Hoping to contributing in whatever small way possible !!

Well I sure missed that question in one quiz. My quizzing experience has been pretty wonderful. On the personal front, it was a wonderful season of quizzing for me. Though with a set partner could have done a lot but never the less finally managed to find a partner in the fag end of the season. Keeping my fingers crossed as the last time I said the same thing, well things dint work out and anyway I don’t want to start on that as a few individuals know about the trials and tribulations I went on with motivating the person. Had I done the same thing looking at a mirror, well I would have improved further and could have become a one man destruction crew. Enough is enough and it’s all in the past so just leave it.

I was actually surprised to find that there was no quizzing club in LIBA and I decided to start on. Thanks a lot to Madhav, Sundeep, Arup and Kenny, and a whole lot of others for this club running. Well I had a range of partners this year (Arjun, Arup, Sundeep, Madhav, Divya, Kenny, Anupama, Karthik and Riddhi) and managed to reach the finals for most the quizzes but then could be placed only for 2 quizzes (Ethiraj and MOP). Towards the fag end of the season, reached the last 14 of one the big 3 quizzes (Tata Crucible). Well now that the season is over, am all geared up for the coming season and I think that with Arjun, well we guys can achieve a lot more provided we stick as a team and work together.

When people are asked about quizzers, the things which come to them are a geeky guy which big classes and just do not have any dressing sense. That’s what you call is a perception. OB classes do help at times, anyways enough of OB that should be on the HR blog not here. Quizzers are not some geeks or nerds who just know everything, in reality great quizzers are people who typically do not ace the class (they just can’t mug up and score marks!), they are good guzzlers (how do you think they able to identify all the liquor brands?) and have a very casual sense of dressing (some even were caps as they feel it’s their lucky charm!). We will always have the exceptions, but again most will follow at least one of the 3 clauses mentioned above. Another age old thing is that girls are non-existence in the quizzing world. This may be true at times, but recently a lot of girls have shown interest to quizzing and their population in the quizzing circles is on the rise. Finally, whoever says that quizzing is boring, well sorry to say this, but it means that the person has never been to a quiz or is an idiot! Quizzing can be the most exciting things to do and if the quiz master is good, you will never even realized that you have spend so much time in a quiz and you have had a blast. So all the critics of quizzing, either you just keep quiet as the more you criticize it; it brings out your ignorance to the open!

Exquizite and Other Quizzes

With the quizzing season almost over and due to lots of Chrysalis work could not post. Well the veteran team of Arun and Sundeep managed to come 4th in the Economic Times Quiz which was a great achievement for this team. The next Quiz was the Tata Crucible and this team around 6 teams from LIBA participated and the team of Arjun and Ravi managed to reach the 2nd round. This was the official debut for this team, a late one though, but I guess LIBA finally has a set team for next year.

LIBA also organized Chrysalis, its annual b-school management fest and this year Exquizite, the corporate Quiz was a big success. Giri “Pick Brain” Balasubramanium was the quiz master and he managed to keep the whole affair into a very lively show. This could have been one of the toughest quizzes, but the finalists were up to it and some of the city’s best were pitted against some very strong teams from places like Bangalore, Mumbai and Delhi. The champions of this year were the young Infosys team of Prasanth and Vinod. They simply rocked the show and proved that Chennai produces some of the best quizzers.

ITM Quiz

The seasoned pair of Arup and Sandeep managed to come third in the quiz conducted by ITM held at Tidel Park. This is the first placing for members of the club for the year. Let’s hope that this placing would start a rush of prizes for the club.

A New Season…..

The quizzing season just started for the mindworks team and within a span of 24 hours, quizzers participated in 3 business quizzes.

It started with the Great Lakes quiz on Saturday and the season began with the regulars, Madhav, Ravi and Sundeep participating in it. The trio was pitted against some of the heavyweights of quizzing not only from the college circles but also from the corporate houses. Though the team did not place, they did manage to catch a glimpse of Giri Pickbrain Balasubramaniam, who will be hosting exQuizite this year.

Next on the cards was the IIT quiz hosted by their Department of Management Studies. Not only the field was pretty impressive, but our quizzers Ravi and Madhav were pitted against some of the most formidable teams from the IIT quizzing circles.

The final stop was Anna University, a few blocks from IIT, this time Ravi was partnered by Arup and the duo was surprised to find that they landed up in a place which was good enough to be called the Olympics of Indian Quizzing with teams from all over the country making a presence and there was even a Lone Wolf entry from Colombia University!

On the whole, it was a good weekend with some amazing quizzing. Though the team is right up there among the top college teams from the city, its time the team goes up and challenges some of the best teams from both colleges and corporate houses across India

Quizzing is for Free People, Not Slaves !!!

Well Quizzing as an activity of interest is slowly becoming extinct within the premises. The only kind of quizzes people are familiar with are ones which involve obtaining of grades and marks. It is indeed a sad fact that most people have a fear towards anything that questions their ability. If it is something done in short notice, their reaction is very awkward and laughable. All they know is how to cram and scram.

College students must realize that the so-called thought process begins from their families. If their parents have not instilled the freedom of thought in them, they are bound to just another average SLAVE - Someone who Loves to Accept Vague Entities !! There are also some of the most common misconception about Quizzes and Quizzing in general. People tend to think that those involved or wishing to involve in Quizzing should be mentally unbalanced people.

Quizzing is an activity that could change the very thinking levels and channels of a person. One thinks and uses the faculties of his/her mind he/she has never known.

"Cut the crap, sonny ! Who will do my assignment? You?"

Well, MINDWORKS believe Quizzing is only for free-spirited people. Those who wish to live their lives according to what is being told to them, may continue to do so.

So many fail because they don't get started - they don't go. They don't overcome inertia. They don't begin

There is something about Fridays and quizzing. The last 3 quizzes on Friday have seen the Resident Quizzer and his partner reach the finals. This time around the place was Bangalore and the venue was Christ College. Your’s truly and Divya reached the finals of the quiz. Though we dint place, it was a good effort for the team as we were teaming up for the first time and we managed to reach the finals from among 60+ teams. Not a bad start but I just hope that the team continues as so far this year, I have been quizzing with a new partner for every other quiz. Also the team of Kenny and Sashwanth also managed to do a good job. On the whole it was a very good experience but the prelims was interesting with questions on Paris Hilton and the Blue Billion, but the finals was one the toughest quizzes that I have been through and it took of the competitive edge off the quiz.

M.O.P Quiz

Fridays seems to be a lucky day for LIBA Quizzers and the team of Ravi and Riddhi managed to come 3rd in the quiz conducted by the M.O.P College. This is good news as the members of the club are consistently taking part in quizzes and this in turn should promote the quizzing culture in the college.

Ethiraj Quiz

The LIBA Quiz team consisting of Arup, Ravi and Sundeep were the runners-up at the quiz conducted by the Ethiraj College for Women. This is the first placement for the Quiz Club for the year. There were around 35 odd teams from across Chennai and even a few teams from outside the city took part in the quiz.

MINDWORKS - Inaugural Quiz

I did not have any Saturday Night Fever but definitely started the saturday with a REAL fever. The day began at LIBA with an inaugural class on OPEARTIONS MANAGEMENT by Mr. S.Arvind. Those Three Hours were indeed a sleepy one if you had antibiotics. My mind was being bombarded with FIXED and VARAIBLE COSTS.......

Well, coming to the highlight of the day : MINDWORKS - Inaugural Quiz at LIBA was an entertainer. Though it began late thanks to dufus class and exam timings, the club somehow pulled all the strings to get it done. Madhav, Ravi and Crissie put in a magnanimous effort in conducting the whole thing.

The event was eventuall won by the pair Anupam Nair and Sandeep Chandel followed by Karthik Subramanium (substituted by Kevin Pinto) and Ruchir Agarwal. God knows what happened to Karthik. He just left before learning that his team had qualified. The winners walk away with 7/10^th of the gold and the runners-up with 3/10^th of the gold.

The QUIZ was great with questions ranging from the origins of ORKUT to that of THE CHAOS THEORY. Well, the tech probs were sorted damn quick and eventually all was well that ends well. But particpating in such an event gave me a feeling that was quoted in one of the questions:

" I feel like a donkey among a group of elephants " - The one question that I answered out of a lucky guess - BILL CLINTON

BT Acumen 2006

The Quiz Club decided to venture out for its first quiz outside the city and the team decided to take a shot at one of the biggest quizzes in South India the “Acumen 2006”. The field was highly competitive with traditional powerhouses such as IIMB and IITM competing against upstarts like LIBA and XIME. The LIBA boys were represented by the “Guru” Arup and “Newbie” Ravi.

The prelims had 25 questions and it had all sorts of questions ranging from:
Which Country’s airline is called the Olympic Air?
To some other interesting ones like:
Who was the designer of the Volkswagen Beetle?

Some questions were really tough and at the end of it the LIBA boys put up a brave effort and managed to miss of the cut-off by just a fraction. On the whole, this experience will be very good for the fledging Quiz Club and the team should hope to build on such experiences become a competitive team in the months to come.

The finals saw IIMB slugging it out with IITM, ICFAI-B and XIME, with the IIMB winning the title. Good quiz set mostly by Anustup Dutta. Well handled by Harsha Bhogle. Even though we were part of the audience, we had a lot of fun and Arup even managed to win an audience prize in the end. On the whole it was a brilliant experience for Quizzers from LIBA and yet another T-Shirt to the collection.

LANDMARK QUIZ

After the successful Mark-It quiz the QUIZ fever has taken over LIBA!

This time the venue was Music Academy on Independence Day for the LANDMARK QUIZ. The posters and ads were up almost for a month generating hype among quizzers of all types. Professional Quizzers, School quizzers, first timers were all as enthusiastic as one can imagine. And among all of them for the first time, not one, but THREE LIBA quiz teams participated.

When we reached the enormity of the event hit us at the first instance. With over 600 teams participating, we felt overwhelmed at that sight. The hall was packed with quiz enthusiasts of all ages and types. Some people could be seen carrying trivia magazines, GK books and the likes, discussing about everything under the sun. We were just munching on the cookies they gave us and trying not to get freaked out!

The preliminary round had the teams answering 40 questions posed to them featuring some toughies like:
What’s common to Leonardo Da Vinci, dog in the basket and pretty Indian woman with lovely hair?
To some easy ones like:
Which vegetable should be washed cut form the bottom and discarded from the top? (We lost that one because I said Ladies finger!)
And some fun ones like:
Four letter word connecting Rakhi Sawant and the song “Something Something”!

Quizmaster Derek O’ Brian made a grand entry for the answer session and things went uphill form them. With audience prizes and enthusiasm at its peak, the atmosphere was that of one huge party. Finally 8 teams made it to the finals with lots of groans from the others who missed the bus. The team names included “No Brainers”, “Namita Bachao Andolan”, “3 M’s-Mama,Macchan,Mapalai”(that was the crowd favorite!).

Even though we were a part of the audience by then, the excitement never ceased till the very end. Just being a part of an event such as this was an experience in itself!

Landmark Quiz 2006

The Landmark quiz is one the most anticipated quizzes among the quizzing circle here in Chennai. It is one of the biggest open quizzes and also one the most fun filled quizzes you can find out there. Every year, it takes place during our independence day and this year it is no different. I just wish that since 15 being a holiday, the Quiz club can at least send 3 teams for this event.
